On 155 acres north of Guthrie the First Annual Frontier Family Days was held featuring frontier demonstrations, wagon rides, family games and cowboy entertainment (that's where I came in). A Western Sass Regulation Shooting Contest was also held with awards given for different categories. The event was planned to show a little of frontier life and how they made it without electricity and running water. Being the FIRST "Annual" festival, not many people knew about it and public attendance was not what we'd hoped for, but the festival has great possibilities for next year. Figured into the low attendance may have been the threat of rain in the morning and hot weather in the afternoon. Everyone who did come had a good time--the location was great and it was very well organized using all available shade. Be sure to look for this festival next year and plan on attending.
Saturday night I was part of the special Oklahoma Roundup hosted by Byron Berline at the Double Stop Music Hall in Guthrie, along with the Hunt Family Band, Rockin' Acoustic Circus, and, of course, the Byron Berline Band. It was a tremendous, sold out, show. (Link to one of my song "What Am I Doing Here" on YouTube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iPlPwsqV8M0)
My friend Gabriel and his family came, and on my portion of the show Gabe sang "You Are My Sunshine" with me. A link to that video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjhlKAq_Cgw
Many of you know that the group Journey West from Phoenix sang some harmony with me on my CD "Here Comes a Change". Well, Dawn and Gale, from that group, were traveling through Guthrie (unfortunately Audrey was not with them) and were able to join us at the Music Hall Saturday night. They harmonized with me on "Western Skies" which is a song on my CD and also on their newly released CD. It sure is fun to have so many musical friends!
This was the 18th Annual Chuck Wagon and Children's Cowboy Festival at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. It was my second year to be invited to be a cowboy entertainer greeting folks at the door and doing some stage shows.
This year was a highlight of my year as I was greeted by many children with comments: "Hey, I saw you here last year," or "I saw you at my school this year," or "I saw you in my town at a festival." And all ages seemed to enjoy attempting a little yodeling lesson or a cowboy tune.
I cannot even capture in words the excitement generated by the chuck wagon food, the reenactors, craftsmen, wagon and stagecoach rides, cowboy entertainers, the medicine show, not to mention the exhibits in the museum. It made a memorable event.
We saw Whitney Allen, host of OklaTravelNet.com at the museum again this year, and she told me about a link to a video of me that they filmed last year.
